Failure

Failure
Over the years I have had my own personal setbacks and at times "failures".  As a young boy growing up my Dad would never let us use the word failed or failure.  He said as long as we get up when we fall we never fail.  Over the years I have listened to many patients talk of their own personal "failures" with regard to weight and health issues.  The pain is real and many times it causes depression and many other health issues.  The pain not only affects them, but many times an entire family.   I would implore each of you reading this to never give up.  When you "give in" or in some cases "give up" you are giving up your own personal freedom to choose whatever outcome YOU WANT.  As the great Abraham Lincoln said, "My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure."  Denis Waitley said, "Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker.  Failure is delay, not defeat.  It is a temporary detour, not a dead end.  Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing."

If you have "failed" in the past and it bothers you, get excited.  That very thought lets you know you are not satisfied with where you are.  That is the beginning of change.  Zig Ziglar says, "Failure is and event, not a person."  Let your past failures motivate you and teach you.  As the great Thomas Edison said after "failing" thousands of times.  He stated he did not fail a thousand times he just learned a thousand ways how not to make the light bulb.

Finally take responsibility for any setbacks or "failures" that occur in your life.  John Burroughs said, "A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else."  The blame game never helps anyone really change.  It only gives a person excuses to possibly continue down a path they shouldn't be on.  Many times in life the "failure" we have is just before a great "success", but sadly that setback detours the person from hedging forward.

In our clinic we have seen so many incredible stories of lives changed.  But each of these individuals have overcame obstacles that had caused them to fall in the past.  Instead of giving up they got up, dusted themselves off and learned from the mistake.  Don't EVER give up.  You have the ability and strength within you to accomplish whatever goal you have.  If you want to lose 50lbs or 150lbs you can and will.  But along the way you will have to battle old bad habits and might slip and fall.  Just get up, put your head down and press forward.  We are here for you to help you in any way we can.  I BELIEVE in you.  Now BELIEVE in YOURSELF.

This week's success is from Adam

When I met Dr. Lane I was over 265lbs and getting bigger.  I had developed Type 2 diabetes with a rare disease that had attacked my pancreas when I was in my early 20's.  I had been very athletic throughout my life and never had a weight issue or health issue for that matter.  I later developed a blood clot in my leg.  My life was spiraling out of control and I was not sure how long I was going to be around heading the direction I was.  Dr. Lane was pretty straight forward with me and did not let me make any excuses or quit.  He was determined to help me and have me help myself.  I can't say it was easy but I can tell you it was worth it.  Today I am just over 200lbs.  I feel great, have more energy than every before.  Not only did Dr. Lane help me in the process he taught me how to continue to live a healthy life.  We have heard it many times before, you feed a man a fish you feed him a day, you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime.  Thank you Dr. Lane- you have changed my life.

Caffeine and Weight Gain

Caffeine

Consuming caffeine and drinking coffee or colas can play havoc.  If you drink caffeinated beverages throughout the day you may actually be causing yourself to eat more.  If you struggle with health issues or to lose weight you may want to kick the habit of caffeine.

Caffeine intake will increase your snacking throughout the day and you'll eat even more for lunch.  Decreasing caffeine can and will help control food cravings.  How do these food cravings start?  Caffeine raises the stress hormone cortisol.  Cortisol raises the heart rate, increases the blood sugar, and signals your body to increase energy stores.  This increases your want for something sweet and sugary.  This is evident after lunch, in the early afternoon when the cravings for sweet foods hit and you're down at the vending machines at work.  This could all be due to the morning coffee you had with or without breakfast

Caffeine can trigger hypoglycemia which can trigger appetite and cravings for higher calorie foods.  The more caffeine consumed, the more you want to eat.  Caffeine can make you feel jittery and affect your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.  Caffeine induced stress can affect how you feel about yourself and trigger emotional eating or comfort food, not to mention overeating causes weight gain.  Caffeine can also lead to feelings of depression.

As mentioned before caffeine increases cortisol levels and with prolonged levels can:

Lower your immune system
Slow your thinking
imbalance blood sugar
increase fat making hormones
increase blood pressure
weaken muscles
weaken bones, causing osteoporosis
increase belly fat

Caffeine has been shown to contribute to insulin resistance.  When this happens, insulin and glucose build up in the blood.  Coffee and soda's with caffeine can also cause insomnia and sleep deprivation.  There are a lot of symptoms and diseases that are caused by increased levels of insulin, other than weight gain.

At Guidepost Health we offer a replacement for your coffee and soda's.  Our programs will give you energy and necessary vitamins, enzymes, minerals, amino acids, essential protein that caffeine drinks cannot do for you.  Call our office or drop by for a free sample, which comes in chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, and orange cream.

This week's success is from Doug and Melinda

Dr. Eric and Inger Lane,

First of all, thank you for the years of devoted health care that you have provided our family. We can't begin to describe the benefits we have received over the past fifteen years. You and your staff have kept us moving along in spite of our injuries and mishaps. Recently, Melinda and I participated in the 21 Day program which included the supplement program designed by Herbalogica. The results were everything we had hoped for. Not only did we lose a combined 20 pounds, but we realized several additional benefits. We further solidified our commitment to stay away from all soft drinks and minimize our overall sugar intake. Both of us have experienced a heightened level of energy. Gone are the intermittent crashes due to carbohydrate overload. Dr Lane and his wife have been terrific during our program. They have inspired us with continual follow-up calls to measure our progress and keep us on track. Also, we have referred to Dr, Lane's book on several occasions and deem it to be a positive guide to overall healthy living. Clearly, they are invested in our success as well and that has made all the difference in the world. Again, we could not be more pleased with the program, products, and personal assistance we have had. WE FEEL GREAT!

Doug and Melinda Knoles

How much protein do we really need?

Protein and Weight Loss

There are a lot of weight loss diets that recommend protein to help lose weight.  There is a low protein diet.  There is a high protein diet and the even higher protein diet.  How much protein do we really need?  Which is best?  What foods contain it?  Does exercising more create more need for protein?  It is true that protein at the right levels and from the right source can trigger fat burning hormones such as glucagon and growth hormone.  The more active you are the more protein you need.

What is protein?  Protein is made up of twenty building blocks called amino acids.  Of those twenty the body makes eleven nonessential amino acids.  The other nine are called essential amino acids and must be supplied by what we eat.  There are two kinds of dietary proteins, complete and incomplete.  Animal and soy proteins are complete because they contain all nine essential amino acids.  Plants like vegetables, nuts, fruits and legumes are incomplete because they lack one or more essential amino acid.  This is why if you plan to get your protein (amino acids) from plants, you need to eat a variety of these foods.

Protein can help to curb your appetite which helps with weight loss.  Protein plays an important role in our bodies.  Proteins provide essential building blocks to repair cells that die and slough off of hair, bones, skin, vital organs and any function of the body.  Protein at the right levels and balance can help regulate sleep and support hormones.

For all these functions the body needs complete proteins.  Our body can also receive the protein it needs by eating a variety of plant products throughout the day.  These can supply our needs without eating animal or soy products.  Eating a combination of plant proteins and amino acids will provide the body with the essential nutrients to build the protein needed for growth and function.  Protein is, again, a branch chain of amino acids which have been broken down in the stomach before they can be assimilated into the body.

It takes a lot of energy to break the protein amino acid bonds.  Plant foods supply the amino acids already broken down, and are much more easily assimilated into the blood to be used to repair the cells and also to help with function.  The amount of protein one needs varies with the activity of that person during the day.  By eating more plant protein based protein we avoid what the animal protein comes with.  Animal proteins are full of hormones in most cases, unless organic.  They help the animal grow larger, lay more eggs.  Antibiotics are used to keep the animal from dying due to the closeness of the population they are raised in.

When we eat the animal that has been injected with antibiotics, we are in a sense ingesting-taking the drug which is like always being on the drug.  This will kill the good bacteria that are there to help in digesting food.  When healthy bacteria are killed off, yeast can grow and spread throughout the body causing many symptoms including weight gain.

The animal based proteins that are the easiest and less stressful to digest would be fish and then chicken.  the other meats-beef, pork, and other four legged animals-are very acidic and cause inflammation and joint damage may occur.  There are many alternatives to eating animal proteins-such as whey.  The Herbalogica products that we carry in our office are lactose and dairy free and the whey in the meal replacement shakes taste amazing.

How much protein do we need?  The RDA recommends 0.4 grams per pound of ideal body weight.  Note:  ideal body weight is where you should be, not necessarily what your weight is now.  To figure out the protein grams you need simply multiply your weight by 0.4.  For a person that weighs 200 pounds that's 80 grams.  That's four small cans of tuna fish per day.  For a 170 pound man it would equal 68 grams.  For a woman weighing 135 pounds, that is 54 grams of protein.  If you are more active during the day, you may require more protein, from 0.6 to 0.7 grams multiplied by your ideal body weight.  This can include more dense green foods and supplementing your diet with the Herbalogica shake to fulfill your needs if you want to avoid animal products.

This week's success is from Denver.

"I originally wanted to participate in Dr. Lanes Weight Loss Program because of the body detox, and it's overall health benefits.  What I found was, that it worked better then any weight loss supplement, or shredded stack system (before the beach), that I have ever tried.  All Noticeable within the first week.  The first few days were difficult adjusting to the diet, about day 5 or 6 I started to get my everyday energy back, felt healthy, and at walmart I literally bought all my food on this program for 30 dollars a week.  This system is a win win, and I Guarantee I'll continue to follow Dr. Lane's guidelines to keep my metabolism high, and my body fat low.  I lost 10 pounds in 20 days and feel better with more energy than I can remember.  I had been out of the country for 2 years in South America and was suffering from all sorts of health issues from living there.  My Medical Doctor had blood tests done and wanted to administer antibiotics.  Dr. Lane told me to give this a try first.  He was confident it would restore my body not only to it's healthy weight but give me the energy and health I wanted.  As all I can say is WOW.  What a great program"

Emotional Eating

Emotional Eating

Emotional eating is the practice of consuming large quantities of food, usually comfort food or junk food due to emotional feelings rather than hunger.  Experts claim that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions.  Many people learn growing up that food can bring comfort.  We turn to food to heal emotional problems because it changes our physiological state.  Any kind of situation we do not like to be in, we escape by eating (or smoking, or drinking, or taking drugs) that change our physiological state to a happier one.

Depression, boredom, loneliness, chronic anger, anxiety, frustration, stress, problems with relationships, and self-esteem issues all can result in overeating and weight gain.  Overeating causes stress to the body, which causes the adrenals to release cortisol; it decreases DHEA, increases blood sugar levels, increases insulin, and increases the fat storing hormones instead of the fat burning ones you are trying to trigger.

How can you break yourself of the habit of emotional eating?  First, identify eating triggers to help alter the emotional eating.  Then develop alternatives to eating such as reading a good book or magazine or listening to music; going for a walk or jog; taking a bubble bath; doing deep breathing exercises ; playing cards or games; talking to a friend; doing housework, yard work or laundry; washing the car; writing a letter or any other pleasurable activity you enjoy that will decrease the urge to eat.  These distractions will help to reprogram your thoughts and change your emotions towards food.

Another tool we use at Guidepost Health is Self-Mastery Technology, or SMT.  We use SMT to change the way you think about food.  What if a person could completely change his or her life in only 20 minutes a day?  What if rewiring the brain to implement weight loss into one's life was as simple as putting on a pair of headphones and a pari of special glasses?  With SMT all of this is possible.  Call our office or make sure and visit my free weekly seminar to learn more about how you too can break emotional eating.

We have had hundreds of success stories in our clinic.  This week's success is from Kristi.

"Before I started the 20 day cleanse I was suffering from all types of small annoying things that impaired my day to day activities just enough to feel sluggish/ bloated, my skin was blemished more times than not and I had that general feeling of wanting to come home after work and crash way before my day was through.  I also had a large mass about 1 inch above my navel that was really beginning to concern me.  Dr. Lane told me about a cleanse that could help my daily symptoms as well as my long term health goals. I was a bit skeptical at first but decided that I needed to give something a try.   I have always admired and trusted Dr. Lane and have had much respect for his practice over that past several years. With the knowledge of a fantastic Dr. behind me and the science of a product that has a proven track record I ventured onward with the 20 day cleanse.

As I began the cleanse I noticed almost immediately (two days in) that the lump I have had above my belly button for nearly 6 months was now almost completely gone.  If anything was my driving force behind continuing it was this shocking result.  From that point I had 18 days to go, I was getting a little worried about how I was going to feel while on the liquid part of the diet but I pushed forward.   To my surprise after day 5 I began to feel a renewed sense of self and a much needed energy boost that kept me feeling great all day long. I woke in the morning each day feeling refreshed and revitalized and continued throughout the day feeling awesome!  At the end of the 20 days I went from 130 pounds to 121 pounds.  My skin looks like it did 10 years ago free of blemishes, my nails are growing like crazy and my entire body feels like it has been through an inner body makeover.

What an excellent program, I would recommend it to anyone that lives in our toxic society!  I am so thankful for this opportunity and to be a part of this great program. I feel renewed and amazing!  Thank you Dr. Lane and Herbalogica for my new outlook and start in life!"

Sleep and Weight Gain

Sleep and Weight Gain?

One of the topics I cover in my weekly Wednesday Seminars is how our sleep effects our weight.  Weight gain is one of the side effects of lack of sleep.  Several studies have shown that this is the case.  In 2010, 35,000 employees of an electric power company were studied.  Most employees were male.  The study found that men who slept five or less hours a night were more likely to experience weight gain than those who slept seven to eight hours a night.  Too much sleep, nine plus hours, was also related to weight gain in these men.

Women are also affected according to a 2006 study from the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.  Women who slept less than five hours a night were 32% more likely to gain 33 pounds or more per year over a sixteen year study than women who slept at least seven hours a night.

Lack of sleep lowers leptin levels.  Leptin ins a protein that regulates and controls appetite.  Low levels of leptin may increase appetite which can lead to eating more and causing weight gain.  This can also lead to sleep apnea due to gaining weight in the throat and decreasing the breathing pathway.  Obesity causes sleep apnea, which leads to more weight gain.

The trick is to get to bed between 9:00 to 10:00 p.m.  Retiring to bed earlier will allow you to reach the deep REM, rapid eye movement, sleep.  By midnight growth hormone is released for up to two hours.  Growth hormone is a fat burning hormone.  This is why not only sleeping seven to eight hours is good but it's important to sleep throughout the nights without getting up to use the bathroom.  Getting up in the night to urinate could be a sign of prediabetes, Candida, or prostate swelling in men.

To go to bed at a good time try taking a warm bath or reading a good book, but not a really good book or you may not want to put it down.  Read something uplifting, positive and motivating such as self-help books.  Avoid watching TV due to all the negative news.  Spend time in the evening with family and friends and avoid eating later than 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.  Decrease your water intake after 6 o'clock at night.

As you take these steps to get a better nights sleep, you will see great results not only with weight loss but overall health.  Sleep is just one of the factors that we address in dealing with weight gain.

We continue to see incredible lives changed in our clinic.  Whether you are just trying to lose that extra weight or get over chronic health issues, take time to attend one of our free seminars on Wednesday evenings.  Go to BurnFatTucson.com and register or call our office and we will save a spot for you.  For the next month I am giving every one who attends a copy of my new book, "Improve the Quality of Your Life - Why Live in Pain?"   We look forward to seeing you.

As always I appreciate you taking time to read my blogs.  Always feel free to contact me by email or by calling my office with any question you may have.  I truly enjoy helping all I can achieve a wonderful Quality of Life.  Life is meant to be lived each and every day with passion and excitement.  There is so much good out there if we just look for it.  For those of you who have lived a life of pain, whether physical or emotional, you can change that.  Just decide to.  Make up your mind that it is you sailing your own ship.  And although the winds may be rough YOU still have the choice to steer the rudder and go in a different direction. I have discovered in my own life that the winds and rough water will eventually cease.  But how far have we let them drive our ship the wrong direction?  Life is full of both mountains and valleys.  But remember it is usually in the valleys we grow the food we will eat on the mountain.

Until next week, have the best week of your life.  Just DECIDE too.

Disc Herniation or Disc Bulge? What Is Spinal Decompression?

Words Defined: Spinal Decompression

A non-surgical therapy that causes the relief of pressure on one or many pinched nerves (neural impingement) of the spinal column.

Spinal decompression therapy uses a medical technology that applies a distraction force to the targeted compressed disc. This gently pulls the spine apart, elongating it and creating a small vacuum between the vertebrae, which pulls the disc back into shape. This vacuum also allows water, oxygen and nutrient-rich fluids to enter into the disc to allow the spine to heal and relieve the pain. The medical term for this vacuum-like effect is known as negative intra-discal pressure.

Patients are fitted with a harness that fits around their hip area as well as a harness that fits around the upper back. Once fitted with the harnesses, the patient lies down on a computerized table, programmed for their specific treatment plan. Each treatment takes about 10 to 20 minutes. The procedure is painless and extremely comfortable.

The typical treatment plan ranges from 10 to 20 sessions over six to eight weeks, with most patients experiencing vast relief in as little as six sessions.  Disc Herniations or Bulges can alter lives and may ever require surgery.  The pain drives people to chronic use of pain medication and ultimately surgery.  The long term success rate of surgeries are not promising.  We have implemented Spinal Decompression in our office and have seen fantastic results.  Patients who were scheduled for surgery and do to the success of spinal decompression are now living a life free of pain.  I am thrilled with the results we have seen and the hope it gives to chronic low back/leg pain and even neck and arm pain suffers.  Schedule a consultation to see if you may be a candidate for Spinal Decompression.  You can also visit our Spinal Decompression site for more information. Is your Body Toxic?

Is your Body Toxic?

Part of weight loss or just getting healthy again really depends on how toxic your body is.  How would you know?  Some signs of a toxic body include metal confusion, mood swings, anxiety, depression, irritability, obesity, fatigue, lack of energy, insomnia, stress, headaches, cravings or addictions, digestive problems, allergies, hay fever, asthma, male or female problems, PMS, prostate issues, hot flashes, impotence, infertility, low libido, eating disorders, such as anorexia, bulimia, or excessive appetite, low resistance to illness and infection, life-threatening and degenerative illness, bowel irregularity, painful inflammation, yeast infections, strong desires ofr sugar, beer, bread, high risk of coronary artery disease, diabetes or hypoglycemia, high blood pressure, skin disorders, acne, eczema, psoriasis, weakness, shakiness, poor muscle tone, muscle soreness or spasm, high alcohol consumption, high caffeine consumption and smoking.  Whew that was a bunch.

Our bodies retain fat because fat cells envelop toxins.  The more toxins in a fat cell, the larger the fat cell will grow.  We create a finite number of fat cells up until puberty.  After puberty we don't grow new fat cells.  The fat cells we have just get larger.

We have seen so many incredible lives changed in our clinic.  Whether you are just trying to lose that extra weight or get over chronic health issues.  Detoxification is part of every program we implement and the results have been nothing short of fantastic.  Make sure to attend one of our free seminars on Wednesday evenings.  Go to BurnFatTucson.com and register or call our office and we will save a spot for you.
