Glycemic Index

General Guidelines About Glycemic Index

There has been much written about the Glycemic Index (GI), what it is and how it affects us.  I will summarize it for you.

What is the Glycemic Index and why is it important?

Our country is on a rapid rise with regard to Diabetes.  We are seeing levels grow at an incredible pace.  Some studies suggest we will see over 50% of our population effected with this disease by 2030.  A disease that 80 years ago did not even exist is now mainstream.  In most cases it has to do with our diet and lack of exercise.  Simply stated when we eat foods that contain any form of sugar the pancreas secretes insulin to pull that "sugar" out of the blood stream.  Over time our bodies(cells) due to the poor diet choices over time become resistant to the insulin released by the pancreas.  Glycemic index gives us information about the foods we eat and how quickly they turn to sugar in the body.  The glycemic index ranks foods on how they affect our blood glucose levels.  The glycemic index ranges from 0 to 100.  A high glycemic index food would have a score ranging from 71 to 100.  Some examples of foods in this category would include simple carbohydrates such as honey, glucose syrup, Maltodextrin, fruit juices, regular sodas, Gatorade, artificial sweeteners such as Splenda and Equal; vegetables such as carrots, parsnip, baked potatoes and instant potatoes; starches such as white bread and white rice.

The medium glycemic index foods have a score ranging from 56 to 70.  These foods should be eaten in moderation and balanced with protein, fiber and good fats.  Some of these foods include fruits such as oranges, grapes, bananas and raisins; starches such as brown rice, whole wheat, Ezekiel bread, whole grain or whole grain rye, whole wheat, brown rice spaghetti; vegetables such as sweet potatoes, green peas, corn and beets.

The lower glycemic index foods range from 21 to 55.  Your diet should consist mostly of low and ultra low glycemic index foods.  These foods include fruits such as apples, peaches, cherries, plums, grapefruit and pears; legumes like lentils, kidney beans, and lima beans.

The ultra low glycemic index foods score from 0 to 29 on the glycemic index scale.  You should, again, pattern your diet to include mostly foods from the low or ultra low list of glycemic index foods.  Some examples of ultra low glycemic foods include nuts such as almonds, peanuts, cashews, pecans and roasted soybeans; berries including strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries; fruits such as tomatoes.

Protein sources such as turkey, chicken, fish and tofu have no glycemic index.  Meat alternatives also have little or no glycemic index.  Again, meats should be hormone free and organic whenever possible.  Most vegetables have little or no glycemic index so they are very good choices to include in your diet and should be eaten more than fruit.  Your diet should contain 70% to 80% vegetables compared to 10% to 20% fruit.

Summary

A few things to remember about glycemic index foods.  When choosing foods it is important to note what nutrients your getting;  what vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, proteins, carbs, fiber and essential fatty acids.  Don't just eat empty calories.  When regulating the blood sugar levels through the glycemic index it's best to eat more vegetables and some lean portent to keep the blood sugar levels low and the glycemic index low.

9 Easy Tips to begin 2012

9 Easy Tips to begin 2012

This email is quick and to the point... 9 easy tips to keep your body in fat burning mode.

1- Eat healthy, whole foods consistently throughout the day; about every two hours.  This keeps metabolism burning. Starving yourself causes blood sugar to decrease, and can cause the body to go into fat storing mode.

2- Avoid refined sugars and refined grains.  These foods trigger the fat making and storing hormone, insulin. When insulin levels increase, it blocks fat being used for fuel.

3- Control any emotional eating. Experts claim that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions. Comfort food releases "feel good" chemicals, and can cause an addictive relationship.  Overeating increases fat storing hormones, insulin, and blood sugar levels.

4- Avoid alcohol, because it causes an increase in insulin, weight gain, and liver damage. Alcohol stresses the body, and increases your fat storing hormones.

5- Avoid consumption of caffeine. Caffeine raises heart rate, blood sugar, and provokes the body to increase body stores, which makes you crave sweet foods.

6- Be sure to exercise, about 30 minutes a day 3-4 times a week. This releases the excess cortisol in your blood, promote overall health of the body, and increases metabolism.

7- Learn to control your stress. All types of stress can cause weight gain because of the chemical reactions that follow stress. When cortisol is released for prolonged periods of times (chronic stress) it can cause weight gain and many other serious problems.

8- Be sure to get adequate sleep. Studies have shown that weight gain is an effect of lack of sleep; oversleeping can cause weight gain as well. Remember HGH (human growth hormone) is released between midnight and 2:00 A.M.  Get to bed by 10 and be up no later than 6.  7 to 8 hours of sleep is optimal.  I have many patients say I am not tired at 10:00.  Easy way to fix this.  Get up at 5:00 A.M. a few days in a row and you will be tired and ready for bed by 10:00.

9- The final tip is to make sure you're receiving adequate amounts of protein. The right levels and source of protein can trigger fat burning levels. Protein can curb the appetite, and proteins are the essential building blocks for cellular reproduction.  Herbalogica shakes are a great way to ensure you are getting enough protein along with the essential vitamins you need everyday.  Just substituting a shake in replacement of one meal will help you lose weight and you will notice an improvement in your energy and health.

Come and try out a program that has helped thousands and finally see what Club Reduce® can do for you, or simply maintain your current health with our amazing services and supplements!  We are excited this year to bring new programs to you.  We have a Quit for Life program that has helped many people finally quit the habit of smoking.  We just launched a Neuropathy program for the millions suffering from this painful disorder.  This year I will be expanding our current weight loss seminar, and I will be adding multiple seminars during the coming months. New Year Resolutions

New Year Resolutions

I really love this time of year.  It has always been my favorite from as far back as I can remember.  From the Christmas "Spirit" that seems to make everyone a little bit kinder to having more time to spend with family.

I have also enjoyed  being able to look back over the past year and learn from mistakes I have made and just evaluate where I am as a person relative to where I want to be.  The New Year has something special about it.  A fresh start, an empty canvas where each person can start again or for some its just the "hope" of a better life.  We call this process our "New Year Resolutions".  Where we resolve to finally get the task done that we may have put off for years.  It may be a "Goal" that we have started many times before, but something came up, or we just fell short again.  Some people say, "What's the use, I never really keep my resolutions."  I hope each of you do not allow this mindset to take over you.

Remember as children how big we could dream.  There  was nothing we weren't going to do or places we couldn't go.  Somehow in life we lose the laughter the joy and many times the dreams.

I don't know what your dreams are but I hope you have them.  I hope this week you have written them down or will write them down and then believe you can accomplish them.  Turn off the TV (especially the news) and take time to dream again.  Don't allow the negative influence that is all around you to detract you from what you really want in YOUR life.  Make 2012 your greatest masterpiece.  I was watching Nick Vujicic (google him) the other day talk about how great life is and all he plans to achieve.  You'll have a hard time finding a more happy, energetic and passionate person than Nick.  If you don't know Nick's story he was born with no arms or legs and he travels around the world uplifting and motivating others.  He has accomplished so much at a young age and has a mountain of goals he is determined to accomplish.

I know most of us will never have the challenges Nick does.  There is so much we can accomplish regardless of our past failures or set-backs.  Stop looking back just to remind yourself of something you didn't do.  There is nothing you can do about that.  We must get ourselves to learn from the past but keep our eyes headed forward.  The only moment that really counts is "right now".  Your future depends upon what you do "right now".  So go out and set the biggest goals you can dream of and then work on them "right now".  Begin to take action everyday and you will be surprised at where you are in one year.  The time to take action is "right now".
